Did you know…?

While Barnes is known as an area of relative wealth, the community has concentrations of severe need.

The latest Index of Multiple Deprivation shows that of 115 neighbourhoods (LSOAs), the North-West Barnes LSOA has the fifth highest level of deprivation in Richmond. It ranks within the 40% of neighbourhoods that are the most deprived in the UK.

Barnes also has a higher percentage of people aged between 60 and 90+ than Richmond or London as a whole.

It is in this context, that the fund continues to respond to the varied funding requests and community needs.

Examples of Grants awarded by The Barnes Fund

You can find more about how much we granted in the last financial year to each organisation, and to individuals according to needs criteria, by reading our Annual Review HERE

HARDSHIP & DISTRESS GRANT FOR AN INDIVIDUAL

The Barnes Fund has supported Richmond Aid since 2006. In 2020 we have awarded two grants totalling £12,500 towards their core funding and their Disability Peer Networking scheme. This helps them to cover their basic costs so they can do the amazing work they do giving advice & information to people with disabilities.

Here is the story of Andrea (not her real name): one of the Barnes Residents who has been helped by Richmond Aid. Andrea is in her 70s, is single and lives alone. Her family is abroad. With a history of depression, she also has osteoarthritis, suffers bronchiolitis and feels that her health has deteriorated recently. At times she struggles to go out. She now “wishes to reclaim her health” and turned to Richmond Aid for help.

Following discussion, she is now linked to a number of local services including FiSH and Barnes Green Centre. She will apply for a grant to attend aqua fit classes at Pools on the Park and she is in contact with Winter Warmth about how to maximise savings and is being referred to Age UK. Overall, Andrea is now less fearful and more relaxed.

ORGANISATION HARDSHIP SPECIAL PROJECT

When the Coronavirus struck, many people in our community were left in hardship, isolated or sick, or suddenly removed from the support structure they relied upon.

At the same time many organisations were forced to close their doors and furlough staff.

The OSO was quick to recognise that there would be an increased need for food, both in the form of food parcels and also hot meals, and they repurposed themselves to respond in two ways.

First: they set up a collection point for donations of food that was then distributed in collaboration with the food bank at the Castelnau Community Centre.

Second: the Cafe team reorganised in order to source, cook and prepare meals for those local residents who were unable to provide for themselves. By the end of May they were supplying 1,000 meals a week.

The Barnes Fund provided £12,000 of seed funding for this project. Other generous donations – of both food and money – and fundraising efforts by OSO made up the balance.

The OSO Cafe & Arts Centre on Barnes Green, had a complete refurbishment in the summer of 2020 in order to get back to its core purpose as a theatre hosting plays, fairs, music, comedy, exhibitions and daytime classes. It is also available to hire for receptions, parties and more, and you can find out more, or help support the Arts charity, here:

ORGANISATION EDUCATION SPECIAL PROJECT

In 2020 we awarded £2,400 to the Thames River Boat project, which provides access to the river for people of all ages, including those with a special need, disability or mental health condition. They offer therapeutic cruises, fun and dynamic educational and learning activities on their boats.

Barnes Primary School pupils went recently. After their trip they wrote: “This is the second year that we have done this and it was great. Different activities kept the children engaged and interested. The staff were all committed to what they do and enjoyed leading the workshops. Thank you – we will definitely be repeating this next year”.

ORGANISATION CORE FUNDING

CCP was granted £41,000 in 2020, as part of a three-year rolling grant sheme. The centre, in Stillingfleet Road, right in the heart of the North Barnes estate, offers a wide range of activities and social support to people of all ages, with a pop-in café, free group activities, regular classes and referral support.

Simon Roach, Centre Director, says “The Barnes Workhouse Fund knows Barnes and the people that live within the area. As an organisation receiving a grant, we know that without their local focus, much of the community need jointly identified via the funding relationship would remain unmet”.

FiSH Neighbourhood Care Centre

FiSH Neighbourhood Care Centre

ORGANISATION SPECIAL PROJECT

FiSH arranges a variety of activities on a weekly basis to support the elderly of the community, all with the aim of combating loneliness and enabling elderly people to maintain their independence for as long as possible.

The Barnes Fund has supported FiSH for many years with grants for both core funding and also help to fund their growing fleet of buses.

In February 2020, an event to celebrate the unveiling of the third FiSH bus was held in the Walsingham Lodge lounge and car park. In addition to some of our Almshouse residents, we were delighted to host Sarah Olney, the Richmond MP, a councillor, BCA Chair, Anika Rice, and FiSH trustees and volunteers. The event was organised by the team from FiSH.

Sandeep Singh

Sandeep is one of the many people who have been granted funding for further education. In his own words:

“My name is Sandeep, I was given a bursary by Barnes Workhouse Fund while I was a medical student to fund my elective abroad as part of my medical degree.

The elective formed a basis of my medical career and helped me choose the speciality that I am pursuing.

I am now a qualified doctor and have been working in and around the Surrey/London border for over 2 years.
